Types of Braces

  Braces at Smile Lounge

Ceramic Orthodontic Braces

This type of orthodontic brace is made of a clear ceramic glass like material.

The brackets are totally invisible and therefore not noticeable. However, the wire is silver although in certain situations it is possible to use tooth coloured wires instead.

The advantage of ceramic brackets is their appearance and, that they cost less than the totally invisible lingual brace. However, for those wishing to go one step further it is often possible to place a ceramic brace on the lower teeth and lingual on the upper.

The other advantage is that they are easy to adapt to. There may be a little soreness of the cheeks for a day or so but this then resolves.

The down side is that treatment generally takes a little longer due to friction between the wire and the bracket. It is however our most popular choice for those wishing to have their teeth straightened.

  Invisible (Lingual) braces

Too embarrassed to wear a brace?
Prefer to wear contact lenses instead of glasses?
Why not have the braces behind your teeth where no one will see them?
Creating a smile to get you noticed with braces that don’t.

Braces that are fitted to the inside of the teeth are frequently referred to as Lingual braces due to their position next to the tongue.

There are several different designs of lingual braces but at The Smile Lounge we only use the smallest and therefore most comfortable, designs.

Treatment can range from simply correcting the front six teeth to complete correction of both upper and lower teeth as well as the bite. Obviously the range possibilities will vary from patient to patient.

Lingual orthodontics is a much specialised form of tooth straightening which many orthodontists are not able to undertake. At Smile Lounge our clinicians are not only able to provide Lingual Orthodontics’ but are known thought the world for their research and development in the field of Lingual Orthodontics.

Because of the extra work involved with Lingual braces the cost is increased. Simple treatment can start at a reasonable amount where as comprehensive treatment with a brace hand crafted for the individual will be much more expensive.

A combined treatment approach will help reduce the cost of treatment whilst offering the advantage of being discrete. This treatment involves the wearing of a lingual brace on the upper teeth and, a normal ceramic brace, on the lower teeth. As the lower teeth are seldom seen by others they will not be aware that you are wearing braces.

  Self ligating brackets

Self ligating braces are the quickest way to straighten your teeth. At the Smile Lounge we use the Damon system.

The brace is half white/half silver so it is more discrete than the conventional steel fixed brace frequently seen in children. However, it is more noticeable than the ceramic brace. The cost is the same as ceramic braces.

Apart from the outstanding speed of tooth movement, the force applied to the teeth is less as the brace is friction free. This opens a whole range of new treatment possibilities. If the Damon brace is used then need for extractions is significantly reduced – all because of the low force seen with the Damon brace.

Also to be considered is the shape of the smile. The Damon system results in a much broader smile. This change in archform can make a significant difference to the end result. However, this is only achievable with the Damon system.
