FAQ
- Frequently Asked Questions

What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental irregularities. Such irregularities include protrusion of the teeth or crowding.

What is an Orthodontist?
An Orthodontist is a type of dentist who specialises in braces. To become a specialist Orthodontist you must first complete 5 years of training to become a dentist. This is followed by a few years working in Hospitals before commencing a specialised three-year training pathway.

When should I visit an Orthodontist?
Ideally children should visit an Orthodontist at about nine years of age. Sometimes it is necessary to undertake treatment earlier so that maximum improvement may be gained with relatively simple treatment instead of waiting till the teens and possibly more complicated treatment.

Why might I need orthodontic treatment?
There are three main reasons for having orthodontic treatment:

  • To improve the appearance of the teeth.
  • To improve the health of the teeth and gums.
  • To improve function , that is to make it easier to eat.

What is involved at your first visit?
The orthodontist will initially examine your mouth and teeth using a small mouth mirror and a ruler. In addition, X-rays will be taken to allow the orthodontist to see how your teeth are developing within the jaw bones and asses the overall health of them.
If treatment is required, the Orthodontist will discuss the options available with you.

How long does treatment take?
This will vary from individual to individual, but usually takes between 6 months and 2 years to complete. Complex treatment can take a little longer.

So how do I arrange an appointment to visit the Orthodontist?
Simply ask your dentist for referral.
